It’s okay to start afraid

You walked so sure, and knew too quickly,

Like you’d planned what needed to be said;

You took your stance and got us drinks,

Never captured by my gaze.

Scared or unsure, she pondered;

Hurt and healing, she thought;

Love, may he not? she doubted.

As the sun and moon passed each other by -

Whilst one was setting, one was rising,

Dusk formed all the while.

She gazed and wondered where his heart may lie -

Somewhere here, somewhere there,

But not too far behind.

His truth touched her light,

For what is broken can be mended in all its while.

She shouts out loud to get his attention,

“Focus, you must, for I’ll go away.”

He comes a little, then some more;

“I am here,” he says, “say what you must.”

But all the while, he knows he’ll stay;

Trust she must, because he says he’ll stay.

So a month passes to the day;

With each new sun, little walks are made–

Some toward and some away,

But never far behind they stay.

She dips her tiny toes a little more each day,

Too afraid to be swallowed whole;

He promises, “I’ll stay, I’ll stay,”

Whilst letting go of all he knew to start anew.

So the two are still a two,

Holding true to starting new;

She to trust and he to love,

But surely, two is still a two.
